THE MOB
Professor Fordney and his host, Sheriff Tom Brennan, sat over after-breakfast coffee.
“This mob, Professor, is going to drive me out of my mind,” the sheriff said. “They escape on motorcycles, meet at a predetermined rendezvous, abandon their cycles and continue in a souped-up car. They killed three men in my county last week. We’ve got to get them, Fordney!”
“Who comprises the gang?” the criminologist asked.
“Pierre Meget, Axel Drew, Ernst Krause and Tom Reardon. The only other information I’ve been able to pick up is this:
“A. Drew’s sister and the leader’s cousin are ex-shoplifters. One of the four is an expert mechanic who keeps the mob’s transportation in excellent condition. This man’s sister is the leader’s sweetheart.
B. Although he wears glasses, Pierre Meget and the mechanic boast that Tom Reardon is the finest pistol shot in the world.
C. Several days ago, Reardon brought two Chicago hoods to the gang’s temporary hideout and suggested to the leader and the mechanic that they become mob members. The leader turned down the suggestion.
“That’s all I have, Prof. Who do you think is the mob’s leader?”
Fordney smiled. “That’s easy, Tom. The leader is… Therefore, the mechanic who plays such an important part in these crimes is…” Who is the leader? Who is the mechanic? Turn page for solution.
