THE MOTH GETS SINGED
Beauteous, thrill-seeking debutante Lorna Waring was aglow with excitement. She had met some real crooks and killers and they had talked openly before her! Lorna was ecstatic. This sinister mob, well-dressed and well-mannered, was composed of Bebe Held, Alice Avon, Tex Logan, Loren Northrup and Hank Jessing.
Quite by accident Lorna witnessed a stick-up by two of the mob. She pledged undying secrecy. But the mob wasn’t buying. She was invited to participate in a daring jewel robbery. She refused. The next day Lorna was in the morgue.
The above is what Professor Fordney knew when he started out to round up the vicious gang. It was not long before he had the following information:
1. One of the mob was a highly gifted bridge player. He had excellent social contacts.
2. Loren Northrup, one-time croupier, had evolved a neat gambling racket and tried to enlist the cooperation of the bridge expert. Disliking Northrup, the bridge player refused.
3. Though Hank Jessing and the bridge player hated and distrusted each other they worked smoothly together in mob business.
4. Bebe Held told a friend that the gang member who actually shot Lorna Waring to death did so as much in wild jealousy as fear of her knowledge of gang affairs. Bebe added that the bridge expert, also infatuated with Lorna, had pleaded with the murderer, who was a close friend, not to kill the society girl.
Although this was all Fordney had to work on, he and picked homicide detectives had the entire mob in custody in less than a week.
