Had the gun been buried in sand for four months, its barrel would not have been glistening. As a hold on Burke, Clara dug up the gun the day after he buried it. Later becoming tired of him and afraid he would kill her if she left him, she reburied the revolver in the same spot and immediately notified the police where it could be found.
