THE BREAK

Four tough prisoners in the county jail tore plumbing from the wall, beat two guards with iron pipes, brutally killing one, and escaped through a hole in the wall, after arming themselves with guns and ammunition. They were Dan Morgan, Sam Chapin, Louis Segal and Anton Kroll, all being held for armed robbery.

A posse was quickly organized and the gang surrounded in a small valley fifteen miles from the jail. Two of the mob were wounded and all captured, but not before one of the gang killed State Trooper Don Burton with a bullet through his head.

Professor Fordney interrogated the sullen four separately but each refused any information concerning himself or the others. From outside sources, however, the criminologist learned the following facts.

1. An erstwhile dancer, one of the four, acted as a front for the gang. He spoke several languages fluently.

2. For some time the ugly Segal and the handsome front had been suspicious of each other.

3. A week before their arrest, Sam Chapin and the front won $4,000 each in a crap game at Anton Kroll’s lake cabin. Kroll does not gamble.

4. The front and the prisoner who killed Trooper Don Burton are good friends. They once ran a gambling house in Cuba.

5. Anton Kroll and the killer have been going with twin sisters who knew nothing of their criminal backgrounds.
