Solution—A Bead on the Bartender

The bullet that passed through Madden’s head (and two other bullets) made holes in the wall a few inches above the baseboard, though Ferrel said the 6’3” Madden was standing at the time! This is how they knew, as Ferrel later confessed, that Madden must have been sitting, or sprawled on the floor, when shot. Madden, who had come to blackmail Ferrel, fell out of his chair drunk and Ferrel deliberately shot him as he slouched against the wall. He then fired Madden’s gun to authenticate his story.
