The place is on the road as you head to the Dalai Lama’s Temple. It is small and cozy, and the seating’s a bit tight. We started with the thali, it was simple and solid. It had Baingan ka Bharta (Brinjal Mash) cooked well to a nice smokiness, Soybean Nuggets in a Spinach Sauce which blends in several spices in a thick gravy with fresh coriander. Chickpeas called Madra were particularly good in a Tomato base and Dal (Lentil) which is a must on any thali and you get a spot of rice and a couple of rotis. Fresh trout is available most of the year here and is recommended masala-style. The Apricot Mutton loaded with cinnamon with a suggestion of Apricot, it’s worth a try. The Mango Chicken is mostly mango with chicken and we gave it a miss, it was not good. What’s good though, is the Hibiscus Iced Tea and the Hot Liquorices Tea. Experiment with these fruity and flowery flavours in the drinks.
The attempt at Moonpeak Thali is to introduce more Indian food to McLeodganj and here they try and do it with a twist. Since there is a lot of natural produce in the region, they use apricot, hibiscus, watermelon, and a range of fruits and flowers in creative ways.
