The Diana restaurant is a landmark and serves what is perhaps the most famous ice cream in the state. It’s three scoops each of vanilla, pistachio, and strawberry in a glass with plenty of fruits and nuts. It’s rich, it’s frozen, and it’s sweet. What’s not to love? The other famous item here is the Diana Cutlet made with vegetables and beetroot which give it its distinct pink colour. Batter fried, this too is hugely loved. Another must have is the Dahi Vada (Yoghurt with Lentil balls) which is fresh, spicy, with sweet yoghurt and completely amazing. Don’t miss any of these three when you come here. No trip to Udupi is complete without a visit to Diana.
One evening in the 1960s, Mr M. Mohandas Pai, the then owner, had a whole bunch of guests drop in unexpectedly to his ice cream parlour. They wanted dessert. Mr Pai checked his stock and found a few bits of ice creams and threw them together and served them. A week later, they came back and asked for the same ‘Gadibadi’ which means Gadbad or getting up to trouble. He realized he had a winner and that’s how the famous Gadbad Ice Cream was born.
