Sitting proudly on NH-17 is Hotel Abhishek. They do a very decent traditional Malvani (standard cuisine of the Konkan region of Maharashtra and Goa) menu. Solkadi therefore, is readily available. This coconut milk and kokum concoction is a great way to start a meal. The highlight though, has to be the Kombdi Vada (Chicken with a deep-fried Semolina Bread). This is a wonderful spicy and rich curry preparation which goes best with the crunchy Vada. Try the locally famous ‘Mandeli’ (Gold Spotted Anchovy) fish. It’s coated with a batter of flour and semolina and deep-fried to perfection. The Teesreya or Clams in a thick masala and the Fiery Crab Curry is terrific and the contrast between the sweet crab meat and the hot curry is brilliantly done here. The Vegetarian Thali has a sour Taat Kadhi (Buttermilk Curry), Usal (Green Peas) and Lauki (Bottle Gourd) with Coconut. The staple is rice and the crunchy, delicious Vada. There are always pickles and onions as accompaniments. Well worth a stop.
Malvani cuisine uses a lot of coconut in almost all preparations as well as the sour and punchy Kokum. This place does a great representation but there is at least one other ‘Hotel Abhishek’ so look out for the right one ie. this one.
