Owned by a strapping Punjabi; bang on the highway (NH-5); popular with truckers (many trucks); Brightly painted; has Manjis/Charpais (light wooden beds) to eat on & then doze; Great Food - X Oh no!! The food at Bira’s Dhaba is served hot and spiced to the gills but alas, it fails to delight and the service is painfully slow. Each bite is a head butt to the tastebuds and the oil in each dish could easily grease truck axles so. Unless your stomach is lead-lined, prepare to burn a hole in your gut! Paneer (Cottage Cheese) Masala, Chana (Chickpea) Masala, Chingdi (Prawn), Masala Chicken, and Dal Tadka look and taste the same. The ingredients are very fresh—paneer from the milk of cows kept on the property and prawns sourced from the nearby Lake Chilika. The dhaba is obviously very popular with the truckers so hey, take a chance.
Lake Chilika is the second largest lagoon in the world and in season, it’s home to an astounding variety of flora and fauna, some of them extremely rare. It’s a comfortable drive from Puri, Cuttack, or Bhubaneshwar and well worth a visit. Take a boat ride and with luck, the fishermen will snare some crabs or prawns to cook for you right there.
