The Thali is the standard order for the many passengers whose busses stop here. It’s rice, a Dal (lentils), and a Subzi (Vegetable) of the day. But there is a whole menu here which will surprise you. We picked a Masala Prawn done in an obscure salty and super spicy, though tasty masala. It was fresh and hot. The green Aubergine is chopped into large chunks, coated with a chickpea batter, and deep- fried. It is surprisingly tasty. The Chicken Curry is more of the onion, tomato, green chilli, red chilli powder, turmeric, jeera (cumin) powder with a sprinkling of coriander which was the same as the prawn. The Dal (Lentil) Tadka was a non-descript Dal made well. The Paneer Masala has a gentle paste of cashew which smoothens and sweetens the gravy. It is a mustard and turmeric-based gravy here. Mustard and Turmeric both become more popular as you get closer to Bengal. It’s not fancy.
Any good Dhaba server will be able to rattle off the surprisingly large choice of dishes available at these little eateries in a breath or two. Munna Bhai goes like a steam train once you are finished asking ‘What’s on the menu?’ Make sure to make your selection from the 100 miles per hour menu.
