The Royal Tibet, started in 1994 by Tibetan immigrants, is a narrow space on the first floor made attractive with the clever use of a long mirror and comfy wooden seating with bright yellow mats. The target customers are students from residential schools in Kodai and you can tell by the food on offer. Almost all of the 161 items on the menu are fairly simple, uncomplicated dishes and many are deep-fried and spicy to boot. What’s not to like if you’re a student used to the fare handed out by school kitchens. The unusual and savoury Potato Cheese Fried Momos are spice free but the dipping sauce is red hot. The extremely popular Golden Dragon Fuyong looks like a Spanish Omelette, is sliced up like a pizza and tastes like a Chinese dish. Somewhere in all that it still manages to be a favourite on the menu. The super spicy Beef Crispy is best described as French Fries with a very meaty taste and texture. Try the basic Momos and Thukpa if you prefer authentic tastes. Quick and smiling service with generous helpings in a quaint and clean environment is always welcome.
If you ask for directions from any young people in Kodai, ask for ‘Tibs’ because that’s the cool name for it.
An International school with a local feel,
Moussaka, Rasam, and Pasta make for a UN-type meal.
An American school shining a beacon of light in Kodai, you bet,
Another dish sweetening the dish called India... is Tibet.
