Located on a busy road along a line of shops, New Sangeetha is probably the #1 value for money (and taste) eatery we have eaten at on HOMP! It’s a large open space with rows of seating and the service staff works hard and fast to keep up with the focused eaters. Ignore the North Indian and Chinese dishes (Aloo Gobi Masala and Paneer Manchurian in TN...really?) and go straight to the phenomenal Vegetarian Thali (multiple refills hooray!). Start sweet with Payasam (made from rice, sugar, and milk) before diving into the food. The Thali—best eaten using your hands—has a steaming heap of rice with super spicy Rasam (thin South Indian soup tomato, chilli pepper, pepper, cumin etc. added to a tamarind juice base), Paripoo (yellow lentil dish tempered with ghee), Pachiri (vegetables with a seasoned yoghurt base), Kottu (vegetable stew), Poriyal (diced vegetables sautéed with spices), Sambhar, chilled yoghurt and Kuzambhu—a deliciously tangy mix of lentils and vegetables prepared with spices soured with tamarind juice and sweetened with jaggery). Try the freshly squeezed Pomegranate Juice as a counter against the spicy food.
Don’t leave Tuticorin without visiting a bakery for some macaroons. Here these beaten egg whites + sugar delicacies of French origin are unique with an unusual conical shape and cashew filling.
The macaroons were sweet and the pans had salt,
We made a U-turn just before yelling ‘Squad Halt!’
We’re heading up the East Coast to taste many food delights,
We’ll never get lost as long as the sea is on our right.
