A Place in My Heart

Sitting with Shah Rukh Khan on the streets of Lisbon in 2016. This was for Film Companion’s first branded show, Beneath the Surface. He was shooting for Jab Harry Met Sejal. My producer Smriti Kiran and I flew to the city for twenty-four hours. It was one of the best conversations I’ve had with him.

A Place in My Heart

With my favourite Diljit Dosanjh! This was our first interview, in 2016. The designer labels and gargantuan fame hadn’t kicked in yet. He spoke in Punjabi and I in Hinglish, and somehow, we communicated and formed a connection. Watching him soar has been a great joy.

A Place in My Heart

I interviewed Martin Scorsese at the Marrakech International Film Festival in 2013. It felt like getting an audience with God. We spoke about Satyajit Ray, storytelling and how he still struggles to raise money for his films. I was so grateful to have the opportunity.

A Place in My Heart

Interviewing Mr Bachchan at the stunning Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes. He was at the Cannes Film Festival for The Great Gatsby, which opened the festival in 2013.

A Place in My Heart

On the sets of The Front Row, a show I anchored on Star World from 2012–14. In the second year, the show was also done in Hindi as Star Verdict for Star Plus. Mr Bachchan was my first guest. His Hindi was so shudh that there were moments when I barely understood what he was saying. Somehow, I survived!

A Place in My Heart

Interviewing Jessica Chastain at the Oscars Red Carpet in 2013. What an exhilarating, incredible experience. Afterwards, I attended the ceremony. Even from the nosebleed seats, it was magic.

A Place in My Heart

With filmmaker Kiran Rao, who was then chairperson of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and Smriti Kiran, the artistic director. For the first few years of the festival, the three of us worked tirelessly to raise money, raise the festival’s profile and to lobby for support from the Mumbai film industry. It was incredibly hard but even more satisfying to rebuild the festival brick by brick.

A Place in My Heart

At the 2016 Jio MAMI Movie Mela, which I hosted alongside former film critic Rajeev Masand. This was a panel on Karan Johar’s upcoming film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

A Place in My Heart

Getting ready to interview Vidya Balan at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013. She was on the Main Competition jury, which was headed by Steven Spielberg.

A Place in My Heart

With Smriti Kiran and Brad Pitt in 2017. Pitt was in Mumbai to promote his latest release War Machine. After a MAMI screening of the film, I moderated a conversation with him, director David Michôd and others. Smriti and I tried not to fangirl but a selfie had to be taken!

A Place in My Heart

With Sanjay Leela Bhansali at the Marrakech International Film Festival in 2013. I am a film festival junkie because when you are at one, time seems to stand still. It feels like, for a little while at least, all that matters in the world is film.

A Place in My Heart

At the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. I was on the Un Certain Regard jury and doing a show for NDTV 24x7, which didn’t leave much time to eat or sleep. Midway through the festival, I fainted and the paramedics had to be called in. I was still laughing but look at their expressions—priceless!

A Place in My Heart

Interviewing Ritesh Batra in London in 2016. This was just after I’d asked him if he ever thought about what happened to Saajan and Ila, the beloved characters from his 2013 film The Lunchbox. He said he didn’t know. But in my head, they are in Bhutan, living happily ever after.

A Place in My Heart

Doing my best to look composed for the camera in the bitter cold of the Berlin International Film Festival in 2016. Even my expression seems frozen!

A Place in My Heart

Waiting to interview Steven Spielberg in 2013. That expression suggests that I was probably nervous as hell and memorizing my questions!
