About the Author

James Martin, SJ, is a Jesuit priest, editor at large of America, the national Catholic review, and the author of many books. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, Father Martin worked for six years in corporate finance at General Electric before entering the Society of Jesus in 1988. As part of his Jesuit training, he worked in a hospice for the sick and dying in Kingston, Jamaica; with street-gang members in Chicago; as a prison chaplain in Boston; and for two years in Nairobi, Kenya, where he helped East African refugees start small businesses to support themselves. After completing his philosophy studies at Loyola University Chicago and theology studies at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts (now part of Boston College), he was ordained a priest in 1999. Father Martin’s writing has appeared in many newspapers, magazines, and websites, both religious and secular, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and many others venues. He has commented on religion and spirituality on all the major radio and television networks, both nationally and internationally. His recent books include Jesus: A Pilgrimage and The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything, both of which were New York Times best sellers, as well as Seven Last Words, Between Heaven and Mirth, The Abbey, and A Jesuit Off-Broadway, which is published by Loyola Press.
