Today a popular pet, the German Shepherd Dog was originally bred to herd sheep. The breed has been invaluable to the military, to police, and in health-care settings as a therapy dog assisting the disabled.

1 Draw a horizontal line about 1 inch (2.5cm) long. Then draw two more pairs of angled lines.

2 Draw the German Shepherds ears.

3 Draw the three angled lines of the top lids, add the lower curves, and pencil in small circles for the pupils.

4 Draw the nose and nostrils, and add the mouth and tongue. The nostril is one ear length (3 inches/7.5cm) from the top of the head.

5 Shade the lines of the muzzle and under the eyes.

6 Shade the ears and top of the head, and add fur texture.

7 Shade the eyes and the markings on the forehead.

8 Shade the fur of the muzzle and the sides of the face.

9 Shade the nose, and color the nostrils and the vertical line between the nostrils darker.

10 Shade the dog’s muzzle and tongue.

11 Add texture to the neck, and erase highlights on the nose and tongue using a kneaded eraser. Finally, add light fur texture and some whiskers.
