Trees have got it all wrong
because they shed their leaves
as soon as it gets cold.
If they had any sense
they’d take them off in June
and let the scented breezes
whiffle through the branches
cooling the bare torso.
In high summer, more so.

Come autumn (not the fall)
they’d put on a new coat:
thick leaves, waxed and fur-lined
To keep them warm as toast,
whatever the weather.
Trees, get it together!
