We made our way out to the deck just passed the large glass window. I wanted to be sure we could be seen just in case Samuel decided to make an appearance. Samuel scared me. I knew he was the one in my room that night watching me. He had control over Caleb then. I realize now that Samuel was angry because he couldn’t have me and Caleb could. The instant I gave myself to Caleb, the remaining heartbreak of losing Samuel was lifted. It was filled with the unknown future between me and Caleb.
There was still a very lite dusting of snow on the ground but it was all beginning to melt. Spring was in full bloom as grass and new leaves began to sprout and animals awoke from their winter slumber.
“Willow, you have to know I would never hurt you,” Caleb stated softly from behind me as I looked up at the crescent moon. The sky was clear and I could see every star in the sky. Vampires have impeccable vision. What looked like a scattered few stars to a human was nothing compared to what a vampire sees. I saw huge start bursts of galaxies. It was striking. “Please tell me what happened.”
“Caleb there is so much more to this than you can even imagine,” I turned to face him. His adorable face was pained with not knowing.
He stood several feet away from me, “Then tell me.” I wanted to go to him. I wanted to be with him but I knew it was impossible. Samuel plagued us both. If Caleb and I were to be together, there would be no escape. How would I be able to move on with him if my past continued to follow us?
“I don’t think speaking of him will help anything. We are trying to keep him away, remember?” I winked and looked up at the moon again.
“Of course, we are, but will you please tell me what happened in the shower? I honestly don’t remember.”
“What good would it do to tell you?” I shivered at the thought.
“It would help me understand why you are so afraid of me,” he stated sadly. God, his voice was pulling at my heart strings. I wanted to pull him into my arms and comfort him. The poor guy was so confused.
“I’m not afraid of you, Caleb,” I said as I spun around to face him. He was leaning up against the stone of the mountain. The silver light from the moon shone down on him as if he were a precious treasure. His hair was glowing but I couldn’t see his eyes. I didn’t want to say it but I had to. I had to stop this now. “I just don’t think we should be together.”
His head shot up quickly and I finally captured a glimpse of his eyes. There were pinched with emotion and his face was a perfect image of shock. I knew he liked me but I had no idea how much. My words cut him deep.
“You’re wrong,” he growled. The very thought made my whole world shift. The thought of being without Caleb was excruciating but it had to be done. “Don’t do this, Willow. We can make it work.”
He was wrong. There was no way to make this work. A love triangle between Caleb, Samuel and I was not my idea of a life. The moment Caleb kissed me I knew he was the one for me. I had feelings for the guy that I never expected to blossom. I knew what I had to do. I had to walk away.
“I have to go.” I tried to walk past him but he stopped me by grabbing my arm gently. His touch made my knees weak. Heat radiated from my core. It called to him. His blue eyes bore deep into my soul and wrapped right around my heart.
“I love you, Willow,” he said deeply. If his words were true I had to push them away. I swallowed the fisted lump of emotion in my throat and I walked away from him. The moment I was out of his sight I let the tears fall. I would hold on to those three little words for the rest of my nights.
