CHAPTER 7

Final Words

As you can see, various job applicants have applied principles illustrated and discussed in the classroom to write killer job application materials of such exceptional and compelling quality that they clearly stand out from 99% of the “competition.”

Remember that hiring managers and recruiters are accustomed to seeing job application materials that are easy to reject because they don’t stand out.

However, what is required of you isn’t easy. It takes trust to believe that the best way to get interviews is to focus on one opportunity at a time and only apply for jobs you really want. This seems risky because it would seem that you’re minimizing your chances of getting interviews (there are all these jobs on the web; shouldn’t I apply for as many as I can?). Go ahead. But you won’t get many interviews that way because it’s easy to reject hastily written job application materials—which is how you’ll write them if you apply to one job after another very quickly without doing at least some of the things recommended and showcased in this manual.

Maximizing your chances of getting interviews for the jobs you really want also takes time, focus and excellent writing. It could take hours for each opportunity. But the time invested is worth it if it pays off.

Above all, spend time reading and rereading the sample letters and resumes in this manual. They are based on the work and feedback provided by former students who were inspired by the work of previous students and tried to make their cover letters in particular even better than what others had done.

Consider what these applicants say in their letters. Can you mimic their strategies but, of course, customize your letter so that it works well and is based on your qualifications and experience…as well as the position you’re applying for?

You will get interviews—but only if you do the things recommended in this manual.

Are you up to the challenge? You’ll have to be if you really want the job of your dreams.
