Pick a play project to try out your favorite possibilities for work
Once you have compiled a list of things that you truly enjoy doing in your playbook, you can then pick your favorite option and get started turning it into a moneymaking opportunity. There is no need to be financially prepared, nor must you quit your job in order to start doing what you love. You can start small today, by creating what is called a play project.
Your play project will be something you take up in your spare time. You should keep your day job for now, until you find out if your project is one you want to turn into a career. In the beginning, it isn’t necessary to spend time figuring out exactly how you will do this by setting long-term goals. Instead, pick short-term goals and let things unfold naturally.
Begin by coming up with a project, mapping it out with as many details as you can, and setting a release date for it. If you want to focus on writing, this could be a blog, eBook, or article. If you realize you love public speaking, your play project could be recording a podcast, presenting at a local conference, or teaching a class. If you enjoy working creatively, you can paint, create graphic designs, or undertake a photography project. Whatever it is, write down in your playbook what you want to do, how you will get started, what steps you need to take along the way to finish the project, and how and when you will release it to the public.
The point of the play project is not to start making money right away, but to find what it is that you truly love, and explore new and exciting ways to work within your passion and talent. As you fine-tune it, your project will begin to take a career-building direction. If you come to the end of your project and realize that you didn’t enjoy it as much as you thought you would, then you have narrowed down your possibilities and come another step closer to finding the thing you do love enough to turn into a career. With this knowledge, you can move on to another play project.
Once you have completed a play project and enjoyed it, you can begin looking into how it can be turned into a moneymaking opportunity, by finding the people who will pay for what you love to do. Until then, take the time to simply explore your passions and possibilities by having some fun.
