Identify your ideal customers and determine the best ways to reach them
When you show your play project to the public, you want people to be interested in it. However, there are many different people in the world with varying interests. Some will share yours and enjoy seeing what you can do, while others won’t give it a second glance.
Though your first project may not be for pay in the beginning, you are still creating it to be used or enjoyed by others. A crucial element to loving what you do for a living is enjoying the people you interact with on a daily basis. You need to like your customers and be able to connect with them in order to make your job enjoyable. Who do you want to work for? What kind of people do you get along with, agree with, and want to help with your product or service? Answering these questions will help you to identify the type of customer you want to target.
Write your answers down in your playbook. Your goal is to feel as though you know these people, and understand how to connect with them. Do some research to find out more about them. When you have an in-depth understanding of your ideal customers, you will have a better idea of how to successfully sell to them—and you can work on finding ways to reach them.
Are your ideal customers blog readers, video watchers, or podcast listeners? Do they subscribe to magazines, check out community notice boards, or read the Sunday paper? Perhaps they are big social media users, read eBooks, or receive email newsletters from various organizations. You need to find out how your customers can be reached, and then use this to advertise your project accordingly. You can start out with one or two mediums of communication, like a blog and Facebook page, to make it simple for yourself. With practice, you can begin using more mediums: the more you can use, the more people you will reach.
In order to make money from your play project, it is essential that you start connecting with people. Identify your potential customers and work out how best to contact them, then share your project with them. Once you have their interest, it’s likely they will recommend your work to others, and you will be well on your way to getting paid to play.
