WRETCHED REFUSE? To raise money in order to restore certain buildings on Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation developed this clever advertisement. Playing on two of the more provocative words of Emma Lazarus’s celebrated poem juxtaposed with the famous faces of a few outstanding immigrants, it served as a reminder of the unexpected legacy of historic mass migration. (Ellis Island Foundation.)

On the cover: ARRIVAL. Despite high hopes of seeing the glorious Statue of Liberty, arriving immigrants often made careful preparations for the sometimes-grueling immigration inspection awaiting them on Ellis Island. The picture was taken on board the British liner Olympic in the early years of the 20th century. (Library of Congress.)
