Acknowledgments for the Fourth Edition

Emily Foster is a writer and editor. She was married to the late Lee Brown for many years and has been an essential part of this project from its inception. For the fourth edition, she took on the frustrating and complicated job of obtaining permissions and the critical job of proofreading its contents. We could not have completed this project without her help.

Peg Brand Weiser served as a consultant for this edition and has been an invaluable source of advice. We are especially grateful to her for an early influence in bringing more women and philosophers of color into the project; the volume is stronger for it.

Garry Hagberg did us a special favor at a key point in the process of obtaining permission and we are thankful to him for that.

This edition contains many essays written especially for it. Among the contributors who wrote for the fourth edition, we thank: Sondra Bacharach, Aili Bresnahan, Hina Jamelle, Jason Leddington, Sheila Lintott, Yuriko Saito, Larry Shiner, Peg Brand Weiser, and Edward Winters.

Essays that were previously published, and have been edited by their authors for this edition include those by: Luvell Anderson, Allen Carlson, Jeanette Bicknell, Jennifer Burris, and Jenefer Robinson.

Some essays were written for earlier editions and appear again in the fourth edition. We previously acknowledged those writers and thank them again.

Throughout our production process we had many questions for the folks at Routledge. Our work was ably supported by Andrew Beck, our editor at Routledge, and his assistant, Vera Lochtefeld.

Finally, we would like to thank those publishers of books and journals who showed an understanding of our situation regarding the costs of permissions. Without being able to work with them, many of the essays in this book could not have been published.
