ugh Reading followed his Interpol partner Michelle Humphrey off the plane, already exhausted. He had barely slept all night, working the phones and reading the reports as they came in about his friends.
His friends who had not only escaped the bombing with the priceless Bible moments before the museum exploded, but who also might have stolen a boat.
What the hell are you two up to?
His phone vibrated in his pocket and he answered. “Hello?”
“Hi Hugh, it’s Dylan. How are you?”
His eyes widened. “Dylan? I’m bloody awful. Have you heard what’s happened?”
“Yeah, that’s why I’m calling you. I’ve got a few of the guys here with me now. We’re in Bilbao and ready to help, but we need somebody on the inside of the investigation to feed us intel. Can you get yourself to Spain?”
Reading smiled. With Kane here, along with whom he thought the CIA operative was obtusely referring to, there might be hope. “I’m already here. We just landed a few minutes ago.”
“Fantastic! Okay, I’ll let you get sorted out. Try to get us some intel and we’ll use our resources to run it down. We need to find them and get them into police custody before they get shot by some overzealous cop, and we need to find out who’s behind this and bring them in so that we can get their names cleared.”
Reading grunted. “Agreed. As soon as I have something for you, I’ll let you know.”
“Excellent. Talk to you soon.”
He ended the call and stuffed the phone back in his pocket, feeling renewed hope now that all of his friends’ friends were involved in helping clear their names.
“Who was that?” asked Michelle.
“An old friend.”
“Is he law enforcement? Because I got the distinct impression you’re going to be feeding him information.”
He gave her the eye, knowing she was baiting him. “Let’s put it this way. He’s not our
type of law enforcement, but he has resources far beyond what we have access to, plus none of the restrictions.”
She waved a hand in front of her, shaking her head “Okay, okay, I don’t want to know. Just don’t get me in trouble.”
He grinned. “I make no promises I can’t keep.”
