… in my family there weren’t a great many opportunities to be with Grandpa all by myself. There was always a crowd of kids and adults wanting to spend time with him. However, there were a few special occasions when he did things that didn’t draw a following. He liked to go to the ocean and sit in the seaweed.

My mother always wanted to ensure that there was someone with him when he undertook this adventure so, at the age of 13 or 14, I would often accompany Grandpa to the water’s edge while he performed this ritual. Grandpa would tell me it was good for his health to do this. So I would sit and watch and wait till he was finished. We wouldn’t talk much together, but I would listen to what he had to say and what he had on his mind at the time.
