I’m sure it’s normal for girls to look up to older brothers with some admiration and sense of dazzlement, but in our case it was fairly extreme. To us they were marvelous creatures, practically God-like, and we yearned to please them and be acceptable. Not that any of us would necessarily show it in any overt way, and nothing sugary, which would have turned them off and wasn’t our style anyway. But we had this great feeling about them—as they did about us—as we all did about one another—and part of it was that they were such fun to be with. They treated us in a loving but offhand way, occasionally sternly bawling us out, but most of the time considerately and humorously, and affectionately.
