One of Jack’s dogs was a Doberman Pinscher called Moe. Jack was in Arizona for his health and living in a rather remote place and bought the dog both for company and as a watchdog. Then he moved on someplace where he couldn’t take the dog, so he shipped him home. It was supposed to be for Mother’s birthday, or something like that. The dog arrived one day on the front porch in a big slatted, open crate with a big sign on it: MY NAME IS MOE AND I DON’T BITE. Everybody gathered around, and Teddy opened the door of the crate and the dog jumped out and bit him. He immediately sent a telegram to Jack: ‘THIS DOG THAT DOESN’T BITE JUST JUMPED OUT OF HIS CAGE AND BIT ME. TEDDY
