“Come on,” Mia called from the front door where she’d been waiting for five minutes now, surrounded by luggage.
“I forgot my toothbrush,” Sky called from the other room.
“I packed you an extra one,” Mia said, leaning against the wall. Out of the two of them, she’d been the more time-oriented one, but she would drag the woman out the door by the ear if this continued. “Hurry, or we’ll miss our flight.”
Mia glanced at the framed picture hanging beside her. It was the one of Sky, Jamie, and her that she’d sketched and left for Sky. When Sky had moved into Mia’s place a few months ago, that was one of the first things they’d put up. Living with Sky felt as natural as it did when they’d been quarantined together, and Mia had realized if she could spend the rest of her life with one person, Sky was it for her.
The little velvet box packed away in her carry-on filled her with fresh sparks every time she thought of it, but she could wait until they arrived in New Orleans. She had plans. After, of course, they traveled to at least one of the restaurants on Sky’s extensive must-try list.
Sky rushed up, half breathless, her short brown hair askew, and Mia’s impatience melted away.
“Sorry,” she said. “I can’t tell you the last time I traveled. I keep thinking I’m going to forget something.”
“You know what you do then?” Mia said, her voice light. “Go to a pharmacy and grab whatever you forgot. We’re just going down South, not Antarctica, love.”
“Enough of the sass,” Sky said, pressing a quick kiss to her lips. “I thought we needed to get going.” Sky’s wicked grin pulsed right through her, but they had a hotel room to themselves and plenty of time to explore that once they arrived.
“Bye, Shelley,” Mia called out. “Bye, Byron.” The cats came rushing up for last-minute scritches, but before Sky could get sidelined again, Mia opened the door and dragged their suitcases out.
Sky took the cue, following her to the car as they began to pack the trunk up the rest of the way. Mia slipped into the driver seat and turned the ignition on, getting ready to race down the highway to the Philly airport. Sky settled into the seat beside her.
“Did you know the original streets of the French Quarter were all named after French royals and nobles?” Sky piped up before Mia even turned the music on.
“About how many more of those gems do you have tucked away?” Mia shot her a look before pulling out of the driveway. Still, a grin rose to her lips. She loved how Sky’s mind worked, even when it annoyed her half to oblivion and back. Mia headed down the street, driving toward their destination.
“You probably don’t want to know,” Sky said, tapping her fingers along the side of the car. “We should find somewhere to have a drink tonight. Celebrate our first trip as a couple.”
Little did Sky know, Mia already had a place planned, and it’d be memorable.
“You know,” Sky continued. “I’ve always wanted to go there, but if I’m honest, I’m glad the trip didn’t happen until now.”
Mia’s grin widened, and she reached over with her free hand to squeeze Sky’s thigh. “I’m happy I get to experience this with you too. Love you forever and back, beautiful.”
Sky tapped the side of her head against the window, a goofy smile on her face. “Love you forever and back too.”
Mia merged onto the freeway, pressing hard on the gas pedal. No matter what destination they traveled to or where they went, the moment she’d fallen for Sky, she’d found her home.
