In this painting by John Trumbull, General George Washington stands on the battlefield at Trenton the evening of January 2, 1777. The next day, Washington outwitted Cornwallis, as he would do with his British counterparts for most of the war. His confident and determined bearing throughout the war served him well against his opponents, both British and American.
