Dearest LGBTI Elders,

I have so much love and respect for you, your struggle and the path you paved for me and others in the LGBTI community.

Because of your courage, your willingness to walk against oppression and prejudice, to endure bruising of body and spirit, our lives have been made easier. We can walk down the street hand in hand with the one we love. We can raise children who can hold their heads higher amongst their friends. We have the freedom to be who we want to be and can live in a safer, more tolerant and inclusive Australia.

I know you worry that you have not done more. And yes, we know there is more to be done. I want you to know that you have inspired me. You have taught me, shown me what is possible, and I will walk in your tracks with commitment and resolve to continue your work. To continue what has not yet been finished and ensure that the lives of people in our community continue to be improved.

And the circle of commitment and change will continue, and your legacy will be mine. I promise also to ensure that you are cared for, held in our minds and hearts through the years ahead.

With pride and with my head held high, I only hope that I can live up to the hopes and expectations of you and those for whom we work.

With love and deep appreciation,

Ro Allen
