I do not yet have children, and I do not yet know firsthand the feeling of having my own child, but have thought often of this, and if I am fortunate enough to one day have a son or daughter I would like to make a promise to my child …

To my future child,

Unfortunately it isn’t a given right to be born into a world where you are safe from harm, loved unconditionally and forever adored. But as your father, I will do everything possible to make sure you are … this is My Promise

Allow me to mention an obvious fact: I am not perfect, and I will make mistakes along our journey together. Things will prove to be difficult at times, and I’m sure we will be tested. But my commitment to you will remain the same … this is My Promise

I will be here to ensure your life begins and continues within a safe home, with two loving parents, and in a world where you can be free to be yourself and to grow into the person that you want to be and perhaps the person this world needs more of …this is My Promise

There will be trying times, of this I’m sure. And in these times I may not be the ‘coolest’ dad. In fact, you may think I’m the worst person in the world. But in those same moments, I will still think you are the most precious in this world. I will endure my heartache that is your sadness for what I believe is the best thing for you … this is My Promise
