A message from the Prime Minister

In 1997 Walter Mikac was a grieving father looking for a way to honour the lives of his two special little girls. What he has created in their names is a remarkable legacy that will protect future generations of children. The Alannah & Madeline Foundation is a wonderful, life affirming initiative, an example of the light that came from the darkness of that terrible day at Port Arthur. As Prime Minister I am proud to be its National Patron.

The Foundation’s vision is a world where every child lives in a safe and supportive environment.

It exists to protect children from violence in all its forms and it does tremendous good for children every day. In 2017 the Foundation marks its 20th anniversary, an important milestone which we all should recognise and celebrate. To everyone who has helped the Foundation become the beacon of light and hope that it is, thank you for your gift of love and your ongoing support to children, families and communities across Australia.

– The Hon Malcolm Turnbull,
Prime Minister of Australia
