In her book Notes on Nursing: What It Is and What It Is Not, Florence Nightingale writes that nursing is not about being a servant or about diagnosing or “physicking” (dispensing medicine) without a doctor’s instructions. To nurse, she writes, “is to put the patient in the best condition for nature to act upon him,” and to be “a careful observer and a clear reporter.”
