Private Joseph Marrinon, 31st Battalion, at the German field hospital at Douai following his capture at Fromelles on the night of 19/20 July 1916. Wounded Australian prisoners of war were given adequate medical attention in field hospitals behind the German lines, although conditions and treatment often depended on the limited supplies German hospital staff could afford to treat enemy casualties. The economic situation in Germany was already apparent behind the German lines in early 1917, with many wounded Australian prisoners later reporting that their wounds had been dressed with paper bandages.
