Bibliography

Although it is extensive, the bibliography makes no claim to be comprehensive. It focuses on works bearing directly on the study at hand; thus, Foucault’s early writings and theoretical discussions of literature and art are not included. The arrangement of material follows the four-volume edition of Foucault’s shorter texts (Dits et Ecrits I–IV, 1954–1988, edited by Daniel Defert and François Ewald, Paris: Gallimard, 1994), that is to say, the order of initial publication. In contrast to that edition, which reproduces only works authorized by Foucault, this bibliography includes unauthorized and unpublished lectures, interviews and so on – also ordered by year of first publication/origin. Among its contents are manuscripts, transcripts and tape recordings assembled in the 1990s in the Foucault Archive located at the Bibliothèque du Saulchoir in Paris (now part of the Institut Mémoires de l’Edition Contemporaine in Caen); the original archive reference number is noted in brackets. While I have kept the original bibliography of the German first edition, this English edition also includes an updated publication list of Foucault’s lectures at the Collège de France.
