The several volumes on Gallipoli that Steve has written over the last few years provide by far the most detailed series of tours available in print. Many visitors come to Gallipoli and take away a sense of the haunting beauty and tragedy that still pervades the peninsula; now they have the books to come away with a greater understanding of what took place a hundred years or so ago, to interpret what they see.
The outcome for the allies was, in the end, a noble failure; those who come on pilgrimage or on tour owe those who served and died here a conscious effort to see beyond tragedy and futility, to appreciate the what, the how and the why. These books go a long way to enable us to achieve those desirable objectives.
