Allow three hours if walking up hill, two if walking down. If you are not fit, do not attempt to walk it. The narrow, and in places overgrown, track is approximately five kilometres long over some rough ground which gets steeper as you near the end, when you are probably most tired.

• Wear sturdy walking boots, non-rip trousers, wide-brimmed hat and do not forget the sun block.

• Take plenty of water for the day.

• Keep to the itinerary. You will be able to see Chunuk Bair, your objective, throughout much of your walk, so stick to the track and do not be tempted to stray from the path.

• Inform someone who is not on this walk where you are going and roughly how long you will be. Mobile phones do not work in the gullies, but take one nevertheless and ensure it is fully charged with useful numbers pre-entered.

• Get someone to meet you at the end of the walk, with a vehicle, otherwise you will have to walk the same route again.

Anzac is a spectacular landscape and there is no better place to view it than from the spur that winds its way up from the Outposts on North Beach to Chunuk Bair and the heights of the Sari Bair ridge. The views are breathtaking and, mixed with the smell of wild thyme and the sound of the wind and wild birds, it is an experience to relish.
