TO OUR HUNTER-GATHERER GENES, the modern-day world looks, sounds, and feels a lot like living on another planet. Buildings and high-rises block or distort our view of the horizon and expansive sky, compromising the most simple and powerful perspective we have of our physical relationship to the Earth. Horns, sirens, and machines batter our aural faculties with a never-ending stream of noise. Neon signs and monster-sized billboards compete aggressively and incessantly for our attention without our permission. Traffic jams, long lines, interruptions, distractions, and big egos are woven into daily life in such a pervasive manner that we don’t even realize the piece—or rather the peace—that’s missing from our lives. In this section, we will look at ways to reconnect to the natural environs from which we evolved, finding, at last, peace and balance among the madness.
