Rory opened his eyes, but it made little difference.
Pushing himself up from the lifeless black dirt, he took in his surroundings, alert for any sign of Chaos. But there was none. He was alone in this dark world. The only refuge in the eternal night seemed to be a large, moon-like globe high in the sky, which glowed dully, and the jagged Rift above him, which had a unique aura of its own.
Taking a few steps back to look up at it, he noticed that it was gradually growing smaller and quietly smiled to himself, knowing that Jason had done it. He had brought the gravity storm under his control.
But where was Chaos? he asked himself, turning back around to survey what he could of the landscape. His eyesight was slowly adjusting to the lack of light, and he could just make out the endless expanse of empty plains undulating away from him. He was coming to the realisation that everything about the place seemed strangely natural to him. He could breathe, and gravity held him down, but the overwhelming difference was the Dark Energy – it was everywhere. It pervaded his every sense – every scent, every sound – and it seemed to flow through everything that surrounded him. He felt gloriously powerful. The Dark Energy surged like lightning through his veins.
Squinting into the distance, he spotted a small beacon of light on the horizon, and knew instantly that it was Chaos. Empowered by the Dark Energy that surrounded him, resolve formed solid in his stomach.
He set off into the darkness.
