SPECIAL SURPRISE “DIRT CAKE”

CAROL ANN RUPP CRAWLEY (Alton, Virginia) raised four girls and one boy. Only son Scott is now a father to three boys and one girl. While Scott, wife Mary, and their children have recently relocated to Hawaii because of his career in the military, each of the four children is Southern born. In birth order, these Crawley grandchildren include ANDREW THOMAS (born in Knoxville, Tennessee), WADE ROBERT (born in Newport News, Virginia), and LAUREN ELIZABETH and GRAHAM DAVID (both born in Fairfax, Virginia). These four and Carol’s other five grandchildren refer to her as Old Mommie. At Old Mommie’s house they like to “pack” grandma’s suitcase, blow bubbles outside, ride bikes in the country, catch frogs and insects, and build things out of boxes and paper. The grandkids love this dessert and always ask for more. They especially like the gummy worms hidden inside, so they advise when you make it you’d best put in plenty!

¼ cup (½ stick) margarine, softened

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened

1 cup powdered sugar

2 (3 ounce) boxes instant vanilla pudding

3 ½ cups whole milk

1 (12 ounce) container whipped topping

1 (1 ¼ pound size) package chocolate sandwich cookies, crushed

1 small (3.5 ounce) package gummy worms (optional)

1 In a large bowl cream together the margarine, cream cheese, and powdered sugar.

2 In another large bowl blend together the pudding, milk, and whipped topping. When well blended, pour into the cream cheese mixture and mix well.

3 Starting with the cookie crumbs, layer the cookie crumbs and pudding mix alternately, ending with the cookie crumbs on top.

4 For a fun surprise, stick several gummy worms in the mixture as you layer it and delight the grandchildren as they find the special critters hidden in their dessert. Chill in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 hours before serving. Serve cold.

MAKES 8 TO 10 SERVINGS.
