A German electrical boring machine used for dugout construction. Large tunnelling machines were tried by the Germans and British but were not successful for long drives or deep mining. Both hand and mechanised drills and borers were used, however, especially in dugout construction. A lack of spoil removal in this photograph suggests that testing or training is in progress.
