MAKES 1 (9 × 13-INCH) CAKE

The coffee intensifies the flavor of the chocolate, but trust us, you won’t taste the coffee. If you really are a purist, omit the coffee and increase the milk to 1¾ cups.
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 9 × 13-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray.
Pour the pudding mix into the prepared pan. Add the milk and coffee and whisk until the pudding is thick and creamy, about 2 minutes. Stir in the cake mix and blend until moistened. Spread the batter evenly in the pan. Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the cake batter. Distribute the butter slivers evenly over the top.
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until the edges of the cake begin to pull away from the sides of the pan.
