Risso’s dolphins are mysterious marine mammals that live in areas with very deep water. They can dive up to 304 meters (1,000 feet) to capture their prey. OceanX has tagged and filmed Risso’s dolphins both near the Azores and in the Red Sea.
The OceanXplorer uses drones and its helicopter to look from the air for large animals like whales, dolphins, and sharks. The helicopter is also used to scout places where large groups of animals might be swimming. If the helicopter pilot sees an interesting group, scientists can launch smaller, fast boats from the OceanXplorer to go check it out.
