THE LONG ROAD
THE COUNTDOWN to the November 2008 election gave way to
a moment of pure joy for the country’s liberals, and many artists sent
me one celebratory image after the other. Right and opposite: Barry
Blitt’s fist bumps. Brian Stauffer’s long red tunnel with a hint of blue
light at the end was the image on the stands the week the voting took
place (below, left). Bob Staake’s memorial cover right after (below,
right) became an all-time bestselling New Yorker cover print.
