resources for rabbit owners

there are many shelters, organizations devoted to the welfare of domestic rabbits, and rabbit supply businesses in existence today. I cannot list them all, so I have decided to limit my listings primarily to those with which I am familiar.

rabbit health resources

House Rabbit Resource Network

P.O. Box 152432
Austin, TX 78715
www.rabbitresource.net

The House Rabbit Resource Network works to educate people about keeping rabbits in their homes and locates foster homes for rescued rabbits. They also sell an inexpensive ($17.95 at the time of this writing) emergency kit for rabbit owners. I highly recommend the HRRN kit as a good basic kit.

K-9 Carts

656 SE Bayshore Dr., Ste. #2
Oak Harbor, WA 98277
www.k9carts.com

This company is one of my exceptions to including only those companies I have dealt with because I have not yet needed a cart for a rabbit. K-9 Carts makes carts for disabled pets (including rabbits) which are custom built according to the animal’s weight, measurements, and needs. I was informed by K-9 Carts that they have been building carts for rabbits for over 20 years, and that most of the rabbits (about 95 percent) have adapted quite well to using a cart. Carts are not as expensive as you might expect—a cart for a rabbit would cost from $250 up.

RHD (VHD) in the U.S. Coalition

www.kindplanet.org/vhd/vhd.html

Unfortunately, this Web page is no longer active, but it is kept up so that concerned individuals can still read the information about RHD. I urge every rabbit owner to read the information still available on this inactive site. It may save your rabbit’s life.

shelters and sanctuaries

Adopt-a-Rabbit Program, The Fund for Animal’s Rabbit Sanctuary

P.O. Box 80036
Simpsonville, SC 29680
www.adopt-a-rabbit.org

This South Carolina sanctuary provides a permanent home for about 100 rabbits which have come from shelters, breeders, laboratories, and unfit homes. It is unusual in that actual physical adoptions do not take place since the rescued rabbits are guaranteed a home for life in the “rabbitats” at the sanctuary. Adoptions are “virtual,” that is, your donation helps provide care for the rabbits, and you are sent a picture and history of “your” rabbit for a donation of $20 or more. People residing near Simpsonville, SC may inquire about volunteer work at the sanctuary.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

5001 Angel Canyon Rd.
Kanab, UT 84741-5001
www.bestfriends.org

This large, no-kill sanctuary includes a Bunny House with many wonderful rabbits waiting to be adopted. Check out the Web site to learn about the rabbits currently available for adoption.

Best Friends also sponsors Best Friends Network, a network of animal lovers and organizations across the country dedicated to no more homeless pets. People who call or e-mail requesting information are put in contact with a volunteer in their area. Visit the Best Friends Web site for more information on Best Friends Network.

Brambley Hedge Rabbit Rescue

P.O. Box 54506
Phoenix, AZ 85078-4506
www.bhrabbit.rescue.org

Brambley Hedge is one of my exceptions to including only those organizations I have dealt with because I have heard such wonderful things about them from people I trust. Brambley Hedge volunteers rescue abused and unwanted domestic rabbits and run a non-profit, no-kill shelter. They have placed many of their rabbits in good homes over the fifteen years the have been in operation. Volunteers at Brambley Hedge are also active in educating the public on proper rabbit care.

BunnyLuv Rabbit Resource Center

16742 Stagg Street #104
Van Nuys, CA 91406
www.bunnyluv.org

To quote from the Web page, “BLRRC is a non-profit, no-kill animal welfare organization, offering education, adoption, and care, plus services and supplies for domestic rabbits and the humans who luv them.” See also entry for BunnyLuv Essentials under Rabbit Supplies.

Double “D” Ranch

Deb & Dale Olon-Wes
1046 Polk Street
Erie, PA 16503-1548.
www.Double-D-Ranch.net

The Double “D” Ranch is a fairly new rabbit rescue/shelter. About three years ago, Deb began learning how to give her own rabbits better care and living conditions. Soon she and Dale became known as “rabbit people,” and they were being offered abandoned rabbits. The Double “D” Ranch came into being. Located in their home, the Double “D” currently has about 30 rabbits. For a young shelter they are doing wonderful work—Dale tells me they have placed 52 rabbits in homes over the past year and a half.

Four Corners Bunnies

Debby Widolf
351 Spruce Mesa Drive
Durango, CO 81301
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/nanetteb

Debby Widolf is a House Rabbit Society fosterer and educator. Four Corners Bunnies rescues and finds good homes for abused and abandoned rabbits in southwestern Colorado and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Debby also sells handmade “lolly-lops” (stuffed cloth bunnies filled with seed). The proceeds go toward the rescue and care of domestic rabbits in the Four Corners area (where the states of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico meet).

The House Rabbit Society promotes keeping domestic rabbits as spayed/neutered house pets in homes where they will receive proper attention and care. Members are active in educating people in the proper care of domestic rabbits as well as rescuing, fostering, and finding homes for the rabbits. The HRS has many chapters operating throughout the United States. Check the HRS Web site at www.rabbit.org for one in your area.
