Josie glanced at the test with a smile. She and Xander hadn’t seen each other in almost two weeks. He’d gone to the other side of the world to set up a new location for the business. Not that she minded. She’d been busy getting Nick established in the new house and all their possessions moved over. As well as meeting with a caseworker assigned to Nick once Mildred filed for full custody.
“Aunt Josie?” Nick called from the door.
She twirled to find her boy in a little tuxedo she absolutely adored. He looked like a little man. “Hi, baby! You look so handsome.”
“You look really pretty, Aunt Josie. That’s a big dress. It’s so fluffy,” he said, and pushed at the champagne organza skirt. Can we go now?”
“In a second, baby. Are Ally and Keir still arguing?”
Nick bounced on his black sneakers. “Yes. He keeps growling and she keeps rolling her eyes. I don’t think they like each other.”
Josie chuckled. “Oh, honey, I think they like each other a lot.”
She slipped the pregnancy test in her drawer. She wouldn’t need it. The moment Xander got a whiff of her, he’d know that their quickie before he left for the airport had gotten her pregnant. It was a good thing he hadn’t seen her since he arrived that morning. He’d told her in no uncertain terms he’d make his damn wedding even if he had to fly the damn jet himself.
“Are you happy here?” she asked Nick.
He giggled and nodded. “Yes! I love it here. I love you. You are a lot more fun than Grandmom.”
“Oh, sweetie, I love you so much! I never ever want you to feel I don’t want you to live with me. I will always do whatever is necessary to keep you by my side.”
Josie still couldn’t believe Nick’s pleading to the caseworker assigned to handle the visits with Mildred. The woman felt Nick knew who he wanted to live with, and his and his parents’ wishes needed to be respected. The caseworker had given Mildred the chance to stop the custody request she’d filed and let Josie have Nick like his parents intended. Shockingly, Mildred conceded as long as she could still visit with Nick, something Josie had never thought to stop.
“I love you, baby bear. Now, let’s go get me married.”
Nick grabbed her hand with his little one and squeezed. “Then can we have cake?”
She laughed and walked beside him to the door. “Then we can have cake.”
