Dear Rose,
Well, I write letters to Albert. Why not also to you, my dear friend? I hope you know that I miss you dearly, and your boy is doing just fine. We’re taking good care of him, yes, we are. We weren’t at all sure he’d be okay, what with the injury, and the grief he couldn’t bring himself to acknowledge. Daisy has been so good for him, and he for her. You were right about those two. I don’t know why I didn’t see it.
Sometimes love can happen between the two most unlikely of people, I guess. Especially when they’re bound together by the common threads of family, home, and friendship. I don’t know why I never saw it before, dear friend. You’re right. They’re perfect together.
Oh, and the wedding was beautiful! Rather quick, some thought, but why waste time when you know it’s right? All us Carvers were present when Wade went down on bended knee after Sunday night dinner at our home. Sadie, Eve, Brenda, and I were sobbing by the end of his heartfelt proposal. I never would have thought those sweet words would have come straight out of “Wild Wade’s” lips. What a fine man you raised, Rose. What a fine man.
Daisy almost didn’t allow him to finish before she jumped into his arms and said yes. Loudly! She’d been waiting a long time for that moment. In a way, I know you have, too.
The wedding was at Trinity Church, of course, the place that has unfortunately been the site of far too many of our runaway brides. No one was even slightly worried about my Daisy, of course. She nearly flew to the altar. You would be surprised to see how lovely she looked in a white dress with flowing train and sweetheart collar. The girl who loves her jeans and flannel certainly looked like a young Grace Kelly on that auspicious day.
Then again, Wade filled out a tuxedo like a movie star himself. And to think they almost talked him into the dating reality show. Offered him money and still he turned it all down for true love!
Beulah still hasn’t given up on Mr. Cowboy, bless her heart. What am I to do? All of mine are hitched and happy so they can roll in more women if they like. There are plenty of men here in need of a good woman. And we are certainly running out of them.
But don’t you worry, Rose, your boy has one of the best of our women. Daisy will never stop loving him. And I’m sure babies are coming along, lickety split! If we are lucky enough to get a girl, I will be campaigning for your namesake, a “little Rose.”
Well, I best sign off now. Daisy and Wade have invited us all over to the opening of his new rodeo clinic. That poor man, Rusty, died a few months ago and left some money to his daughters. That helped Wade and Daisy to start the clinic, where Wade will be teaching some of his skills. Lincoln will be lending a hand, teaching roping among other things.
I remain your oldest friend, in death as in life. Keep a light on for me, dear Rose.
Kisses and hugs,
~ Lillian Carver
