“Gelassenheit” is set in 2095, about a generation before the events of Michael Bunker’s Pennsylvania Omnibus, in which the story is set. In the story, Chris explores what might motivate Plain People to choose the inherently violent path of armed rebellion in direct opposition to their Amish upbringing, a cornerstone of which is a commitment to pacifism.
Want to know what happens to Mary after “Gelassenheit”? Take a look at Chris’s series of tales about Bestimmung Company, a group of TRACE commandos who combat the oppression of the Transport Authority contemporaneous with the events in Bunker’s novel. Tales of B-Company: The Complete Collection includes the story you just read and three novellas—Gettysburg, Susquehanna, and Columbia—as one story. We meet Mary as an adult in Gettysburg, where she’s become the captain of TRACE’s B-Company.
Chris has been a technical writer and editor for over twenty years. His first novel, Shadows Burned In, won the 2015 eLite Book Award Gold Medal for Literary Fiction. In November 2015, he edited and produced the collection Tails of the Apocalypse, which contains short stories from some of the most talented independent authors writing today.
