“Everyone really likes your first-date idea!” Kelsey says. She looks up from her phone at me. Sometimes I feel like the phone is a part of her body, like she’s holding it so much it’s going to fuse to her hand.
“Who is everyone?”
“You’re so funny, Oliver. Everyone!”
I must still look confused, because she says, “Everyone on social media! Are you messing with me again? Sometimes I can’t tell when you’re messing with me.” She lightly pokes my shoulder with her free hand.
“Why would you think that?” Flora didn’t give me this tip, but my fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Robinson, did. When someone asks you a question and you don’t understand what they are talking about, ask them a question back.
“You’re so funny, Oliver,” Kelsey says again, shaking her head. She looks back down at her phone.
My girlfriend is looking at her phone. My girlfriend is posting about her boyfriend on social media. I am Kelsey’s boyfriend.
I could watch the video she took of me asking her out on a date again, but I don’t feel like being reminded of what a fidgety dork I am. I read through comments.

I look from Kelsey to Flora’s room through the window. I’m so used to seeing her asleep, but when I look closer, I see that her eyes are open. She sees me looking at her and grins.
Kelsey laughs at something on her phone, and I look at her. When I look back at Flora, she’s turned over, and her back is to me.
Kelsey looks up from her phone and smiles at me. The late-afternoon sun lights up her hair, her face, and I want to tell her she’s beautiful, but I’m too distracted thinking about Flora.
She looks down, and I think, Next time.
