Kelsey is going to be mad! #TeamFloriver #quaranteen

TEAM FLORIVER! #quaranteen

I’m still reading the posts when Kelsey calls me. She never calls me.

I pick up, but it’s loud in the background. I hear birds squawking. “Hello?” I say hesitantly.

“Oliver!” Kelsey’s voice sounds a little shrill.

“Where are you?” I ask. “Is everything okay?”

“I’m at the beach,” she says. I can hear the waves hitting the sand.

“Oh, cool.” I’m not a big beach person, but suddenly the thought of having sand between my toes sounds like the best thing in the world.

“I saw the video!” Her voice is shrill again.

“Oh, yeah, isn’t it great? Flora thought of it.”

“Thought of what, exactly? How to make me look like a fool?” she says angrily.

“A fool? What are you talking about?”

“The video. You guys are so …”

“Such good roommates,” I say.

“That’s not what people online think!”

I try to play dumb. “Really?”

“Yes, really. Everyone is saying how cute you two are together. How well you get along. How we shouldn’t be together.”

“Well, that’s … that’s—”

“Stupid? Not true? Fake news?” she fills in.

I look at Flora and realize she’s waving at me madly. “Um, hold on one second.”

“Tell her you’re going to delete the video! You’ll make a new one just for her! You’ll make it up to her!” Flora says quickly.

“Um, Kelsey, I should go,” I say. “I think I have some work to do.”

“Work?” she says incredulously. “You’re in quarantine. What kind of work could you possibly need to do?”

“It’s, uh, it’s work for you. To make it up to you. A new video kind of work.”

“Don’t make any more videos!” she orders. “That will just make things even worse.”

I look at Flora helplessly. “Okay. We will think of something.”

“We?”

“I mean me. I mean I. I will think of something.”

“Just … just forget it,” Kelsey says, sounding calmer. “Just take the video down. I’m sorry. I’m just ready for you to be out of quarantine!”

“Yeah, me too,” I say, but then I look at Flora and think I might be lying.

“Well, I should go. I think I’m going swimming,” Kelsey says.

“Me too.”

“What?”

“I mean, I should go too.”

“Okay, bye.”

“Bye.”

I hang up, rub my head as I delete the video.

“I’m sorry, Oliver,” Flora says quietly. “I thought the video was such a good idea.”

“Yeah, so did I.”

“We’ll figure out a way to fix it.”

“No, it’s okay, Kelsey said not to bother.”

“Really?” Flora looks surprised. “Did she say why?”

“I think she thinks it’ll make things worse. So weird that people mashed up our names, isn’t it?” I say, trying to change the subject.

Flora is looking at her phone and doesn’t answer me.

“Flora?”

She finally looks up, worried. “Did you say something?”

“I did, but what’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing!” she says quickly. “Well, it’s just … since that video went up, people are talking about Kelsey. Guys are offering to take her out on dates if you … break up.”

“Wait, for real?”

“People are so creepy! The Internet is so weird!” She’s trying to sound lighthearted but she still looks worried.

I want to ask more, but Joey arrives with food and for vitals checks, and then my mom and Flora’s dad and Goldy show up. Even though we’re roommates, I still feel like we’re never alone.
