Games Cited

This is not a critical and complete ludography of SNES/SFC games but rather a list of games cited within the book. As such, the information within is trimmed and edited to make it simple and accessible for the purpose of the book—to identify which games and which version(s) are being discussed. More information on individual games, game versions, and companies can be obtained through further research on reference websites such as MobyGames or Wikipedia, as needed.

The list is American-centric partly because the book is American-centric too. Games are listed in alphabetical order of North American titles (i.e., Final Fantasy III instead of VI and Out of This World instead of Another World). For each game, the version or port being listed depends on the book’s arguments when discussing them. Disparities in title, release year, developer, or publisher are given when pertinent. Platforms have been streamlined. All computers, including the Amiga, Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, PC-88, PC-98, IBM-PC compatibles, Macintosh and Apple, DOS and Windows operating systems, and so on, have been concatenated into a global “PC” term. NES and SNES often include Famicom and Super Famicom but not the opposite.

Finally, the names of developers and publishers have been brought down to their basic, stable roots to standardize and keep the list simple and readable. For publishers, corporation, or society types, divisions, subsidiaries, and so on have been ignored (Nintendo LLC, Nintendo of America, and Nintendo Co, Ltd. are all “Nintendo”). For developers, internal team names, company suffixes, and individual celebrity persons have been ignored (Nintendo EAD, Nintendo R&D1, and Shigeru Miyamoto are all “Nintendo”). Last, supplementary particles such as “Games,” “Software,” “Entertainment,” “Studios,” and so on have often been eliminated. I have tried to ensure that the various names remain specific enough to be searchable in the future.
